Electrical Certificate Renewal: Intervals and Re-examination

Renewing an electrical qualification certificate is not just paperwork to be filed away. If the certificate of an electrician, senior electrician, instructed person, or inspection technician expires, that person may no longer perform work covered by it. The company then risks problems during an inspection, following an accident, or when making an insurance claim.

The Short Answer

Electricians and senior electricians generally have to renew their examination certificates every 3 years. Instructed persons must be re-examined no later than every 3 years. An inspection technician’s certificate is valid for 5 years, after which the technician must take a new examination administered by TIČR.

Annual electrical safety training does not replace the three-year re-examination. These are two separate obligations: ongoing development of knowledge and periodic verification of professional competence.

In practice, this is still commonly called “obnova paragrafů elektro” (renewal of electrical qualification sections). Since vyhláška 50/1978 was repealed, however, the correct approach is to identify the specific level of professional competence under the current legislation: instructed person, electrician, senior electrician, or inspection technician.

Electrical Certificate Validity: 3 or 5 Years

The time limits vary by type of qualification. Electricians, senior electricians, and instructed persons are subject to three-year intervals or a shorter period specified in the examination record. An inspection technician’s certificate is valid for five years. Simply “attending training” is not enough—the person’s knowledge must be formally verified in the prescribed manner.

The rules for instructed persons deserve particular emphasis: periodic re-examination must take place no later than every three years and must include proper verification of knowledge. This is not the same as the annual safety training that employers must provide in addition to this requirement.

Certificates issued under the former vyhláška 50/1978 are assessed after 1 July 2022 under the transitional provisions of the new legislation. The specific date, scope, and type of certificate are always decisive. Electrician Re-Examination: How Renewal Works

The employer arranges examinations for electricians and senior electricians; for self-employed people, this responsibility naturally falls directly on them. The examiner does not have to be an employee of the company. Businesses often use an external inspection technician or a specialist company to conduct the examination in the prescribed manner. The underlying principle remains the same: renewal is not simply a matter of attending a lecture. It requires formal verification of knowledge.

An inspection technician takes a new examination administered by the authorised organisation, Technická inspekce České republiky (TIČR). After the technician passes, TIČR issues a certificate valid for five years. Inspection technicians’ certificates can be checked publicly—the TIČR register shows both the expiry date and the certificate’s scope.

Two things must also be kept separate: the periodic examination described above and periodic training. In addition to arranging the examination itself, the employer must ensure the ongoing development of qualifications, typically through safety training for work on electrical equipment. If the employer has no internal policy setting a different interval, this training must take place at least once a year.

Under § 19 odst. 2 zákona č. 250/2021 Sb., at least 80% of the answers in each part of the examination must be correct. Candidates may proceed to the oral part only after passing the written test, and a failed examination may be retaken no earlier than 15 days later.

Expired Electrical Certificates: Risks for the Company

The consequence is straightforward: until the qualification has been successfully renewed, the person concerned may not perform any activity covered by the certificate. There is no grace period simply because an examination has already been booked. An expired certificate means the person must stop performing the relevant work.

The consequences are even more serious for inspection technicians: an inspection report signed by someone whose certificate has expired is invalid. This applies even if the report was signed as part of an inspection that began while the certificate was still valid. The date of signature is decisive, not the date on which the work began.

The consequences may arise in two areas. During a SÚIP inspection, the labour inspectorate may regard this as a breach of the employer’s obligation to ensure that only professionally qualified persons work on electrical equipment. The second area concerns insurance: if damage occurs and it emerges that an inspection report or operational activity relied on an expired qualification, the insurer may reduce or refuse the payout. This is not automatic, but it is possible.

Keeping Company Records of Electrical Certificate Validity

Relying on every employee to monitor their own certificate is asking for trouble. An employee may leave, forget, or confuse the periodic examination with annual training. Responsibility for ensuring that only people with valid certificates work on electrical equipment rests with the employer.

The solution is a simple authorisation matrix—a table listing each relevant person’s certificate type, the date of their most recent examination, and the expiry date. Reminders should be scheduled at least one month in advance, ideally two, so that there is enough time to arrange an examination even during holidays or periods of staff absence.

Alongside the date, it is also advisable to check the scope of each certificate. An electrician whose certificate covers low voltage cannot automatically work on high-voltage equipment—the scope stated in the certificate is decisive. Verification is easy for inspection technicians: the public TIČR register will tell you within a minute whether a certificate is valid and what its scope is.

Instructed persons must be re-examined no later than every three years. This is where businesses most often make mistakes because the requirement is confused with annual occupational health and safety training, which is a separate obligation.

A Practical Authorisation Matrix

Proper records do not have to be complicated. What matters is that they contain the information you need to determine quickly who is permitted to perform which work and when renewal is required:

• worker’s name,
• level of professional competence,
• voltage range and type of equipment,
• date of the most recent examination or instruction,
• expiry date,
• planned renewal date,
• link to the stored certificate or examination record,
• person responsible for monitoring renewal.

Set reminders at least one month in advance. Larger operations benefit from two dates: the first reminder two months before expiry and the second one month before. This gives the company time to arrange the examination, account for holidays and shifts, and correct any errors in the documentation.
